What if loud music really COULD send you to hell?
All Gavin ever wanted was to drum in a heavy metal band, and find a girl who could tolerate his hair clogging up the sink and appreciate the exquisite poetry of Cannibal Corpse lyrics.
When Lou – the mysterious stranger with the voice of doom – comes to Gavin’s small English village, all Gavin’s dreams begin to come true; he falls for Suzie, a cute metal chick with a serious lack of hand-eye coordination, and his band At War With Satan – fronted by Lou, of course – is opening for Spiked Coffin, only the biggest heavy metal band in the world.
Little does Gavin know that Lou’s a demon using their music to recruit metalheads to fight in the upcoming apocalypse. But when the battle goes horribly wrong, Lou, Gavin, Suzie and the reaper Death of Mauling by Particularly Homicidal Badgers set out across Hell to save an innocent girl and stop the triumphant demonic forces relocating to Earth, permanently.
At War With Satan is populated by a cast of motley metalheads, cuddly kittens, horrid heavy metal clichés, reapers, zombies, shades, gargoyles, accountancy clerks and gourd juice. Are you ready to sell your soul for true metal?

At War With Satan Steff Metal 9781496030887 Books Reviews
This book was hilarious. I loved every word. I laughed out loud and even threw up the horns for it. Kudos!
I just finished this book and found it a hell of a lot of fun. (Pun not intended - ok maybe slightly...) I cannot write an enormous review like the other guy did, but I can say this is a great, well put together story, easy to read, with fun, likeable characters. While knowing about metal music would certainly help (I don't know much about Metal myself, though probably know more after reading this), it is not essential to enjoying the story. Some aspects are quite Terry Pratchet-meets-Dogma-esque, and if you enjoy witty, surreal stories that don't take themselves too seriously you will love this book.
I really wanted to like this book and the author does have a good sense of humor, but I just never really got into the story. I did read the whole book but it took me a long time and I was a bit bored. I didn't understand some parts (the slang), however the author did do a good job of describing all unfamiliar terms and everything about heavy metal, it is just not a subject I find interesting. I was reading it for the supernatural parts and enjoyed the uniqueness that is presented of the afterlife and how all the Gods get together to hang out and have parties. For me the humor was just too much at times and I never strongly connected to the characters. I was frustrated with some of the decisions characters made. I do see how others will enjoy this book, it just wasn't for me.
I received this book free for a review, but the review is truly how I feel about the book.
Gavin is a drummer, lives in a small English village and dreams of being in a heavy metal band with a heavy metal girlfriend. Next thing you know he’s playing in a great heavy metal band, has a great heavy metal girlfriend… and is caught up in the war between heaven and hell. Because you can’t have everything.
I really enjoyed reading this story. Steff Metal’s writing is enthusiastic, wry and, on the whole, pleasingly polished. And there is a laugh out loud moment around every corner (or turn of the page).
I did have a few small quibbles, namely the section in hell probably goes on a bit long and needs tightening up, plot-wise; the location of “small village England” feels chosen for the wider appeal rather than the familiarity of the author – I would have been happy with “small village New Zealand” to be honest; the Goth/Emo vs Heavy Metal was a little too stereotype-happy; and a slightly more ironical framing of the classic “metal sexism” would have been welcomed by this reader. These are small though, none of these seriously detracted from my enjoyment.
At War With Satan has a definite Terry Pratchett/Robert Rankin/Neil Gaiman vibe and that’s a high compliment. Needless to say, I recommend this book to fantasy lovers, heavy metal fans (you’ll love it, you know you will), anyone who was a teenager in the early 90′s, and anyone who wants to see what good reads are out there beyond the traditional publishing model. Steff Metal is a writer I’ll be keeping an eye on.
As you might suspect from the cover image and the author's name, this could be a story about Metal Music, all wild guitar riffs and double-bass drum solos. It sort of is. But it sort of isn't, because, pared down to its undies, it's a boy-gets-girl romance, all emo and violins. You don't even have to know anything about Metal to enjoy it, because everything is pretty much explained all along.
Steff Metal certainly seems to know a lot about metal music, but then, maybe she doesn't, and she's just another creation of her own imagination. She's good at that, too. I mean, just look at the chapter names "The Post-Apocalyptic Bondage Zombie Goat Chapter Eleven," and my favourite, "Chapter Fifteen Where it's All About Kittens and Jesus and Chocolate-coated Unicorns Farting Rainbows."
Because, you see, this is the story of a metal drummer. Now, everybody makes fun of drummers, especially the metal kind, because they're dumb and freaked out and have spent too much time destroying their hearing in the midst of "22-inch double bass drums, 10- 12- 13- and 14-inch toms, two high hats, Remo pinstripe heads, a set of Dark Energy 18-inchers, a Warlord Masai signature snare with a sound like a skull cracking against asphalt, and Iron Cobra pedals." Whatever that means, it sounds like a serious drum kit.
However, this drummer has a job, is a good cook, has stopped doing dope since his brother's death last year, and always wears his seat belt. He's also just fallen in love with Suzie, about the only beautiful hesher chick that ever entered Old Fetidswamp, England. Who also happens to be almost blind, but that's just details. Nobody is exactly normal. Hence the fun of it all. The suspense for me is, how is this guy going to get the girl and live happily ever after while at the same time staying troo to Nekro, Satan, Heavy Metal, and Megadeth? (Don't worry, there's a glossary at the back of the book.)
The answer is to help Satan's son, Lou, win the Apocalypse. Yes, that's right, the real, end-of-days-Armageddon. Except the Four Horsemen can't make it this time, because they've gone to an Afterlife Manager's Conference with The Lord and Lucy Ferr. Yes, that's Her all right. I mean, this writer has creativity. So this time around the Apocalypse will take the form of a Heavy Metal concert invaded by mobs of youth groups, emos, and Team Jesus Christian Metal bands. Mayhem ensues.
And that's only the first half of the book. The rest makes Dante's "Inferno" look like Sunday tea with Aunt Maisie in the parlour.
If you want a fun romp through Heavy Metal and the Underworld to discover that those who seem to be losers can be really lovely people who win in the end, take a read through "At War With Satan."
Highly recommended for metal heads, fantasy readers, and all fans of creativity, especially the humorous type. (Actually, I wonder if a troo hesher would find it very Grymm at all. Of course, heshers are usually illiterate, so it isn't really krieg anyway.)
I was given an electronic copy of this book in order to write this review.
Great read.
